Admittedly I had never heard of Jefferson Fox before I happened to stumble upon his new video on Vimeo. The song is hauntingly beautiful and the accompanying images do what every good music video should, enhance and breath life into the music. Giving a second layer of meaning to the track, the video is loosely based on the legends surrounding the death of blues great Robert Johnson. It could be that I have a soft spot for the video as it was shot in my old stomping grounds of Savannah, GA, but even if the blues aren’t your thing the grace of the cinematography is worth the three minutes of your time it will take to watch.

The Beck-Page version of The Yardbirds was short, loud and blessed with so much raw talent it just couldn’t be contained. The group in this incarnation only recorded a handful of tracks including “Stroll On” which was recorded for an appearance in Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1966 film Blowup and featured a twin lead guitar break by Beck and Page. The song is epic to say the least and though it features two of the greatest guitar players of all time, it almost didn’t happen. It was only after The Who declined the offer, The In-Crowd had scheduling conflicts and The Velvet Underground were unable to obtain work visas in the UK that The Yardbirds were considered for the project.
Jeff Beck will be coming to Tampa on May 7 performing at Ruth Eckerd Hall.

Want more? Check out the clip of The Yardbirds in Blowup. I don’t know who is dreamier…young Jimmy Page and his almost full grown muttonchops or young Jeff Beck in his ultra tight high waisted white pants.

Dreamy psych girl group Dum Dum Girls make their way to Ybor City this Sunday before heading off to Europe. The LA based band just released an EP on March 1 that consists of three original tracks and one bad ass cover of The Smith’s “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out.”

Luisa Sobral | Not There Yet
I’m not usually one for sweetsie cola jazzy indie pop singers and I’m not usually one for artists signed to major labels either. That being said though, this video is so damn cute I just couldn’t help smiling while watching it! Enjoy.

Having just released a new record Tan Bajo on In The Red and KEXP making Obsesionao today’s song of the day on their blog, Puerto Rico’s best party band is having a pretty good couple of weeks. This is garage-punk at it’s finest. Taking their que from The Ramones and Dead Boys each track is packed with energy and guitar licks that pack a punch.

Those Darlins, the hottest thing to come out of Murfreesboro, Tennessee since…well ever…will be heading out on the road to support their upcoming release Screws Get Loose which will be available thanks to Oh Wow Dang on March 29. This time around their sound is a bit more pop than punk, but with the same amount of fun we have come to expect from the band.

PHOTO OF THE WEEK: Truth & Janey - Ain’t No Telling
Taking their name from the Jeff Beck Group’s album “Truth,” this Iowa based band spent most of the 70’s playing dates in the Midwest with artists like Leslie West and Blue Oyster Cult. Using their own funds the band released “No Rest for the Wicked” in 1976. The album features some solid shredding anchored by tight bass lines and plenty of cow bell. Unfortunately with little prospects of breaking out of the Midwest scene the band broke up…but at least we still have the music.

BONUS: If you can’t get enough of Midwestern boys tearing it up on their six string, check out Radio Moscow. I swear if you haven’t heard this band already it will blow your fucking mind. Check out it out: Broke Down

While we all anxiously await the new Fleet Foxes release set to come out this May, front man Robin Pecknold has given us a treat with a new free EP Three Songs. While it doesn’t feature the other members of the band, there is a duet with Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear and is a beautiful first solo effort.

NEW OBSESSION: Oh Sunshine - I Belong To You
Sultry vocals, fuzzy guitars and catchy hooks make Oh Sunshine a band that everyone should be keeping on their radar. According to their Facebook page we can be expecting a release from this Japan based band in the coming year. Fingers crossed it’s soon!
Posts have not been coming lately as I have relocated from Brooklyn, NY to sunny Tampa, FL. Stay tuned though as I will be resuming regular posts bringing you on a musical journey through the ages and the latest concert news from around the Bay area!
